God’s Covenant Promise to Abraham – Part 9 – Genesis 22

27-30 March

Abraham tested

📝 Overview:

Gen 22:2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

So God once again asks Abraham to demonstrate his faith by trusting God with his hopes, his future, his deepest longings and this time with his only son whom he loves. Genesis 22:1 describes it as a test, signaling to the reader that God had no intention of going through with it. The messenger of the Lord stops Abraham’s hand, preventing him from killing his son. God never wanted child sacrifice after all. Rather, he wanted Abraham to face his own conflicted and divided loyalties.

💭 Something to think about:

  • “Take your son, your only son, whom you love, that is, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him up there as a burnt offering.” No ambiguity here, God made it clear as to what Abraham was to do and with whom he was supposed to do it to. A great test indeed! – As we’re now in the middle of “Holy week” 2024, consider God’s redemptive plan for fallen mankind through Jesus, a reality we’re now living in and to which the whole world has also been invited to :
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 12:32)
  • A Great price was paid by both Father and Son.
