God’s Covenant Promise to Abraham – Part 2 Genesis 14

03 – 05 March

Abram and Melchizedek

  • Genesis 14 is a commentary on one of the finest hours in Abram’s life, when he defeats four kings in battle, declines the riches of men, and expresses His faith in God. In brief, five kings invaded the region in which Lot lived, defeated the local kings and made off with everything, including Lot, who is Abram’s nephew. Abram learned of it and along with his servants chased down the invaders, defeated them, and brought back Lot, as well as everything else.
  • Melchizedek. Who is this mysterious figure who was BOTH king and priest of the GOD Most High? Hebrews 7.3 described Melchizedek as without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. Because of this passage, some have thought Melchizedek was actually a pre-Bethlehem appearance of Jesus.

Something to think about

  • Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abram and blessed him and Abram gave him a tenth of his assets. Melchizedek blessed Abram out of his resources, and Abram blessed Melchizedek out of his resources. This is a great attitude for us to have in the community of believers, an attitude of mutual blessing.
